Social Media Resume?

j0178845Have you ever logged into Facebook or MySpace and seen a picture of a coworker or good friend that does not view them in the best light? Maybe... they had one to many at the pub with friends and someone clicked, loaded and tagged or maybe they are displaying a crude gesture... Do you mention the possible impact that action could have? Do you make a general comment about if your momma would blush, reconsider? Do you ignore it and pretend it isn't there? Do you unfriend the person because their actions my adversely affect YOUR career? Last month at our office meeting our relocation director mentioned several stories that other Relocation Professionals were talking about at an event... Someone tweeted they "would rather die than live in XYZ" and before they left the airport the person he was meeting to close a huge deal called and said-get back on the plane, we would prefer to not work with you.  They were following his tweets. It isn't just the younger generation using social media and google to do a little research into people.  It can make or break your professional career and impact your personal life as well.  I know my opinion of people has changed because of the things I have seen them type on twitter and facebook (and even if they chose myspace OVER facebook) I know that facebook and other sites offer "privacy" protection, but those filters COULD malfunction at any time leaving you liable and open to public scrutiny. As an independent contractor, it might not impact the company who holds your license, but it could certainly impact who contacts you to market their property or who recommends you to a friend. What are your personal rules for social media? Have you unfriended someone because of their actions on a site?  Would you?
